Get straight into work

There are several options if your child is keen to start working and earning straight away. One of the most important things is helping them to get a CV written and prepare for interviews.

The Prince’s Trust offers some great advice on getting prepared for finding a job, including getting your CV right, career planning and interview tips. These tools and resources can be found here.

Internships

This is an extended period of work experience that offers the opportunity to try out a job and get to know an industry. Although some may be unpaid or pay travel expenses only, there is growing recognition that this excludes those unable to afford to work for free and many now pay minimum wage or a small salary. An internship can last from a week up to a year and is a great way to boost a CV with real-world experience.

Start a business

Those with an entrepreneurial streak might want to consider starting their own business. If this appeals then it’s important to speak to people who’ve been there as well as making a solid business plan. There are lots of organisations that provide free advice and funding for those setting up in business. Local universities often run mentoring schemes and local authorities may have access to grants.

Get a job

The world of work can be incredibly varied in terms of job role, hours worked and salary paid but regardless of the details most job applications will require an up-to-date CV and covering letter detailing previous experience and any relevant qualifications. Find more advice here.
