We hope you’ve had a calm and relaxed summer break, filled with sunshine, laughter, and well-deserved downtime! As the school gates swing open and the buzz of a new school year begins, it’s time to start to switch into PTA mode once more…

September is a fresh start, a chance to build on last year’s successes, welcome new faces and set the tone for a year of collaboration, creativity and community spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned committee member or stepping into a new role, your contribution is invaluable. PTAs are the heartbeat of school life, bringing parents, carers and staff together to support children’s education and wellbeing. And Parentkind is with you every step of the way.

To help you hit the ground running, here are some key tasks to focus on this month.

Welcome meeting and AGM planning

Kick off the term with a warm welcome meeting. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect, introduce new members, and outline your goals for the year. If your AGM is coming up, start preparing now — set a date, send out your notice and prepare those reports! It’s also the perfect time to encourage nominations for committee roles.

Update your contact lists

Ensure your committee contact details are up to date and GDPR-compliant. If you have new families joining the school, consider sending out a welcome letter or flyer introducing the PTA and how they can get involved.

Plan your autumn events

Start brainstorming ideas for autumn fundraisers or community events. Whether it’s a harvest festival, Halloween disco or a cosy coffee morning, early planning helps secure venues, volunteers and publicity.

Review finances

Take stock of your current funds and set a budget for the coming year. If you haven’t already, check the signatories for the bank are still current and get your financial governance in great shape before the fundraising begins!

Connect with the school

Meet with your headteacher or school liaison to align on priorities and explore ways the PTA can support school initiatives. A strong partnership with the school is key to a successful year.

Promote membership and volunteering

September is the perfect time to recruit new members. Use newsletters, social media and school noticeboards to highlight the PTA’s impact and invite parents to join or volunteer.

As we step into the new term, remember: every raffle ticket sold, every cake baked and every hour volunteered makes a difference. Your energy and enthusiasm create lasting memories for children and strengthen the school community.

Here’s to a fantastic start to the school year — let’s make it one to remember!
