Fundraising in secondary schools can sometimes feel like a challenge. Older pupils are busier, parents are less visible, and the school’s needs can be more complex. But with the right approach, PTAs can run successful, purposeful fundraising campaigns that not only raise money but also build community, support pupil wellbeing and enhance learning.

Here’s how your PTA can make fundraising fun, relevant and impactful.

Focus on what matters

Start by identifying what your school really needs. Is it new tech for classrooms? Mental health resources? A revamped sixth form common room? When fundraising is tied to a clear, meaningful goal, it’s easier to rally support from pupils, parents and staff. Try asking pupils what they’d like to see improved. Their input can guide your priorities and boost engagement.

Fundraising ideas that work in secondary schools

  • Battle of the forms
Turn fundraising into a friendly competition between year groups or tutor groups. Whether it’s a sponsored walk, quiz night or donation drive, pupils love a challenge and a prize!
  • Pop-up events
Host themed events like a winter market’ or summer social’ with pupil performances, food stalls and local vendors. These are great for building community and showcasing pupil talent
  • Fun suns
Whether it’s a colour, costumed or night run, these are easy to organise and great for building funds. You could even go as far as muddy runs or obstacle courses. Make them more appealing to teenagers by pitting the staff against pupils for some friendly competition!
  • Sixth form enterprise projects
Encourage sixth formers to run their own fundraising initiatives. For example, selling handmade items, running workshops or organising events. It’s a great way to build leadership and business skills
  • Parent talent auction
Ask parents to donate their time or skills like gardening, baking, tutoring or photography and then auction them off. It’s fun, creative and builds connections across the school community
  • Digital campaigns
Use online platforms to run donation drives, raffles or crowdfunding campaigns. Share your goals clearly and celebrate milestones to keep momentum going

Don’t forget the power of partnerships

Local businesses are often keen to support schools. PTAs can build relationships with shops, cafés and service providers for sponsorships, raffle prizes or event support. It’s a win-win, businesses get visibility and schools get resources.

Fundraising isn’t just about money — it’s about community, creativity and making a difference. With the right focus and support, your PTA can help create lasting improvements that benefit every pupil. So, dream big, plan smart and let’s make it happen!
