School Uniform Research

Our latest report explores parents’ views on school uniform, examining how they feel about the cost of uniform, their purchasing choices when it comes to brand-new or second-hand/pre-loved uniforms, as well as how parents think schools would be able to help reduce the financial burden buying school uniform places on many families.

Key findings 

  • Many parents tell us they are worried about how much school uniform will cost this year. 45% say they will have to rely on credit cards to afford them
  • 88% of parents said that being able to choose where to buy uniform helps them meet their child’s needs
  • Parents agree that children learn just as well in a plain uniform as a branded one, and schools can still create a strong sense of belonging without lots of branded items
  • We asked parents how they afford the cost of uniform – almost 30% face having to go without heating or eating at some point
  • Plain uniforms and iron-on school badges could help 82% of parents save money
  • Over half of parents told us their school allows them to buy plain uniforms and sew or iron on logos, but 4 in 10 parents don’t yet have this option
