DONCASTER OPPORTUNITY AREA APPOINTS PARENTKIND TO GET MUMS AND DADS ENGAGED IN CHILDREN’S EDUCATION

We have been been awarded a contract by Doncaster Opportunity Area to deliver a project to increase parental engagement in schools in an effort to reduce absenteeism and improve academic performance. The project will run throughout the academic year from September 2019 to July 2020.

Following a competitive pitch, we will recruit a minimum of 20 local primary and secondary schools to take part in the innovative project to help schools get more mums and dads involved in their child’s learning.

Using our Blueprint for parent-friendly schools’ — a framework designed to guide schools on how to encourage all parents to play a positive and active role in education — we will undertake an initial audit with each school and develop practical strategies to help overcome barriers to positive participation while demonstrating the different ways in which parents and carers can get involved.

Doncaster Opportunity Area acknowledges absenteeism, exclusions and educational attainment need addressing and recognises the value of parental engagement as a means to combat this growing problem.

Our aim is to create parental engagement strategies that teachers and school leaders can easily make part of their school day to improve attendance and reduce exclusions.

There is plenty of research to show that parents are a real force for good when it comes to their child’s education and learning. When they have regular and meaningful conversations with their children, set high aspirations for their futures and demonstrate their own interest and support of learning at home and school, the impact can be significant.”

Kerry-Jane Packman, Development and Memberships Director at Parentkind

The Doncaster Opportunity Area is pleased that Parentkind will be delivering this work to support schools to improve their parental engagement strategies. Our programme focuses on improving social mobility and we know that engaging with families will be key to this.”

Charlotte Bown, Head of Delivery at the Doncaster Opportunity Area

The project will run in the 2019/2020 school year. Schools interested in taking part are asked to contact us at [email protected] by the deadline of Friday 19th July 2019.
