Busting myths

Does your school have any misconceptions about your PTA? Share the true or false cards below and put them in the staff room for everyone to read. You could even make your own if you think there are specific topics that staff are unsure about or unaware of.

PTA true or false: The PTA can fundraise for the school and increase its budget

False! While PTAs can fundraise for equipment the school has asked for, they can’t fundraise directly for the school or in ways which do not align with their constitution. Any funds PTAs raise belong to the PTA to be distributed in a way the committee votes for. PTA committee members are legally responsible for funds raised, which is held in a PTA bank account with at least two signatories.

PTA true or false: School staff can sit on a PTA committee

True! School staff are free to volunteer and be part of the PTA if they want to, but they’re not required to be.

PTA true or false: The school are responsible for the PTA

False! PTAs are legally separate organisations to the school and make their decisions by a committee vote. If you have a concern about the PTA, these should be directed to the PTA committee and not the headteacher.

We have a guide and toolkit on starting a PTA on our website, which includes role cards, AGM invites, parent guides and more – perfect for bigging up your PTA and the amazing work you do!
