PTA volunteers are the heartbeat of school communities — organising events, raising funds and creating moments of joy and connection. But behind every successful fair or disco is a team of parents juggling work, family and life’s endless to-do list. So how do we keep the magic alive without burning out?

Start small, think big

Not every volunteer needs to chair a committee or run a raffle solo — short, specific tasks like designing a poster or baking a cake can be a game-changer. It allows more parents to get involved without feeling overwhelmed, and it spreads the workload more evenly.

Encourage people to contribute in ways that suit their skills and schedules. For example, a parent who can’t attend events might be brilliant at social media or sourcing raffle prizes from local businesses.

Share the load

It’s tempting to do things yourself because you know it’ll get done, but that’s a fast track to burnout. Instead, build a culture of shared responsibility to make sure no one feels like they’re carrying the whole PTA on their shoulders.

Use tools like shared calendars, WhatsApp groups, or online sign-up sheets to keep communication clear and tasks visible. Always celebrate the wins — big or small — to keep morale high. We recommend having a policy in place when it comes to WhatsApp/social media use – this will help to ensure they are used for the intended purpose and chats don’t become a place for all to discuss non-PTA related matters.

Prioritise wellbeing

Volunteering should feel rewarding, not exhausting. Be mindful of how much you’re asking of your team and how much you’re taking on yourself, especially during busy school terms. If an event feels too ambitious, scale it down. An alternative summer event can be just as impactful as a full-blown summer fair.

Check in with your volunteers regularly. A quick, How are you doing?” can go a long way. If someone needs to step back, support them without guilt or pressure.

Ask for help — you’re not Alone

The PTA Community Team at Parentkind are here to support you. Whether you need advice on managing your committee, ideas for inclusive events or just someone to bounce ideas off, we’re only a message away.

We’ve seen it all, from PTAs with two members to those with twenty, and we’re passionate about helping you build a team that’s resilient, inclusive and full of heart.

Keep the joy alive

At its best, PTA volunteering is joyful, creative and deeply fulfilling. It’s about connection, community and making a difference. By looking after each other and asking for support when needed, we can keep that joy alive and make sure every volunteer feels valued, supported and inspired.

Remember – you’re doing something amazing, but it should also be fun and rewarding.
