Feeling unsure in your PTA role? You’re not alone

Whether you’re new to the committee or have been involved for years, it’s completely normal to have moments of doubt. You might be wondering if you’re doing things ‘right’, if you’re making a difference or if you even belong in the role at all.
Regardless of your doubts, your contribution matters more than you know.
PTAs thrive on the passion and commitment of volunteers like you. You don’t need to have all the answers or a background in fundraising or event planning. What matters most is your willingness to support your school community. Every small action — whether it’s attending meetings, sharing ideas or helping at events — all adds up to something powerful.
PTA roles are a steep learning curve, they evolve over time and as you settle into the committee it will get easier. Don’t forget to keep talking to the rest of the committee and remember PTAs are collaborative by nature, so lean on your fellow committee members. Chances are, someone else has faced the same challenge and can offer advice or a helping hand.
Don’t worry about making a mistake – we always say ‘it’s PTAs, not life or death’. Although it may feel like there is a lot of pressure to get everything right first time, mistakes happen, and they’re part of learning. It’s about how you deal with the set backs that count.
Remember — every bit of help counts. You don’t need to lead a fundraiser or chair a meeting to make an impact. Supporting others, sharing ideas, or simply being present is valuable. PTAs are strongest when everyone plays to their strengths. PTAs are made up of diverse individuals with different skills, backgrounds, and personalities. That’s what makes them so effective!
If you’re feeling unsure, please don’t keep it to yourself. The Parentkind PTA Community Team is here to support you. Whether you need practical advice, emotional encouragement, or just someone to talk to, they’re only a message away.
You can contact them via the website or join the PTA Hangout to connect with other members across the country. Sharing experiences and learning from others can be incredibly reassuring—and often, you’ll find you’re not the only one feeling the way you do.
Being part of a PTA is about progress, not perfection. You’re helping to build a stronger school community, and that’s something to be proud of. So, take a deep breath, reach out if you need support, and keep going. You’ve got this — and we’ve got you.
