All Party Group – Parental Participation in Education

Parentkind is delighted to announce they have become secretariat to the new All Party Group – Parental Participation in Education launched by the Minister for Education, Peter Weir MLA – 3rd March 2020 in Parliament Buildings.

National charity Parentkind has been championing the voice of parents and PTAs for over 60 years, and they feel that there has never been a greater need for an All Party Group on Parental Participation in Education to be set up.

"Schools are not an island", Head of Northern Ireland for Parentkind, Jayne Thompson says. "Parents must be involved with their children’s learning and school if their child is to thrive and reach their potential. But in order to enable parents to become that educational partner, they must be equipped with greater insight and information on how education works and how they can support their child’s learning at home and at school".

The All Party Group will support best practice and provision for parental engagement in education policy and directly with schools by:

Kerry-Jane Packman, Executive Director of Programmes, Membership and Charitable Activities attending the event summarised the launch as a momentous day for the almost 600 thousand parents in NI. "Today", Kerry-Jane said, “the landscape for parental participation in education will change. I was most encouraged by the warm and meaningful desire of the MLAs to have parents placed firmly at the heart of education policy and we know that Jayne Thompson has been championing for this for many years, so the dynamic partnership of Parentkind and the ALL Party Group can only be a force for good for parents".

Hear from Karen Mullan MLA Vice Chair of the APG Parental Participation in Education, the new vice chair for our All Party Group - Parental Participation in Education. Karen has always firmly supported parental engagement in education and we will greatly value her expertise with this group.
