Mother’s Day ideas for PTAs

If your school community likes to celebrate Mother’s Day, there are lots of activities and events PTAs can organise that are fun and inclusive.

When considering children who may find Mother’s Day events upsetting, it’s a good idea to ask parents for their views and speak to teachers for their guidance.

What are the origins of Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day originates from Mothering Sunday, a day marked by the Church of England when everyone returned to their mother church — the main church or cathedral in the area. It falls on the first Sunday in Lent, the period of fasting in the run-up to Easter.

Nowadays, Mother’s Day is celebrated widely as a day of thanks and appreciation for all mums and mother figures, whether that’s a carer, grandmother, big sister or special aunty.

Three inclusive Mother’s Day activities for PTAs

1. Afternoon tea

This is a great way to get all the family involved, as everyone is invited. If you’re a group of mainly mums, why not find a few dads to orgainse this one (our event pack has full instructions!). Kids can get involved too making table decorations, serving cakes and washing up.

2. Pop-up shop

Buy or ask for donations of gifts. Children bring in a small amount (£1.50-£3 seems to be about the going rate) then choose a gift for their mum/s or another special person in their life. Set up a wrapping station for kids to wrap up what they’ve bought.

3. I love you’ photo booth

Set up a photo booth’ area for kids to dress up using props and have their photo taken. Print off pictures for the kids to stick on to cards, write their own message inside and give to whoever they choose.

Take a look at our selection of posters that you can download and edit to reflect your own event.
