Parentkind 2018 Highlights

It's been a really busy and exciting year here! We’d like to say a big thank you to each of you, including every Parentkind member, for your amazing work to support your children, schools and communities and helping us in our mission to bring homes and schools together. Don't forget to share your personal highlights with your community too.

We started the year by changing to Parentkind to enable us to better reflect everything we do as a membership organisation and charity that supports and champions parents playing an active role in their child's education.
This year we've developed over 40 new PTA resources (including posters, flyers and templates) and expert guidance on GDPR which thousands of Parentkind members have made use of.

For the first time this year we did a secondary school PTA Welcome Pack. In total, 2,544 PTAs in primary and secondary schools received these packs so that 150,000 parents benefited from the top tips and inspiration from the Be School Ready magazine:

“The school and parents thought the packs were brilliant.”

We loved sharing the results of our Annual Parent Survey research with insights from 1,500 parents’ on hot education topics including mental health, funding and accountability. Here's some of our coverage in the BBC, TES and the Guardian.

Every Parentkind member association was sent a new PTA Expert magazine, packed full of ideas and inspiration from fellow PTAs. You told us:

“It was really helpful - I read it from cover to cover”
"Really great resource, super helpful."

PTA volunteers have worked incredibly hard this year, first and foremost to benefit our children, but resulting in loads of other benefits too – making new friends, building a community and supporting other parents to name just a few. Well done and thank you for sharing your experiences with us:

“Teachers, parents and carers give freely of their time and knowledge to make the school a great place for the children”
“The PTFA is about more than raising funds, it’s about engaging a community and supporting parents”
“Being a volunteer and now working in the school has really helped me to support my own children’s learning.”

Making sure that those who make education policy consider what parents are concerned about is an important part of our work; in 2018 we:
  • Responded to 11 government consultations including parents’ views on Ofsted, Estyn, and Relationships and Sex Education.
  • Launched new Parent Insight Panel to give parents an opportunity to regularly have a voice in education plus a new Parents' Parliament in Northern Ireland.
  • Got coverage on parent issues including the BBC, The Guardian, Schools Week and TES.
  • Held parliamentary events in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Ran a project in six welsh schools to look at engaging more parents through a digital platform.

We have helped over 120 schools be more parent-friendly by holding 16 workshops for over 300 governors and school leaders:

“We have gone from having no Parent Council to a dedicated group that supports the school across 14 classes.”

In November we launched an exciting new membership to support schools to establish and effectively run Parent Councils to strengthen their partnership with parents.

For more information on our work please look at our 2018-2020 strategy and latest Impact Report.

Here's to 2019!

When it comes to how well a child does at school we know that parents matter so we look forward to continuing our work with PTAs, Parent Councils, parents, educators, partners and policymakers (and you!), so every parent can be a force for good in education.
