The summer fete is New Hinksey CE Primary School PTA’s biggest event of the year; it costs around £700 to put on and raises around £3,500. So when it had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the PTA knew that unless they could come up with an alternative, they would face a massive ‘black hole’ in their income. On a mission to keep funds coming, they decided to try something a little different - a neighbourhood Safari Walk. To coincide with the St Albans Sustainability Festival, The Lea Primary School and Nursery in Harpenden, Hertfordshire planned to run a compost-creating and bug-making event. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the festival was cancelled, so the PTA got their thinking caps on to come up with a different project to keep the community involved in the sustainability effort, a cause which is growing in importance and recognition in the St Albans area.
